First, we need to determine what kind of text we are reading.
This is important because they are written in 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT STYLES.
Fiction text is written in a
PLOT SEQUENCE.
Nonfiction text is written in an
ESSAY FORMAT
with Main Ideas and Details
an Introduction & Conclusion
Next, once we determine what kind of text it is, we can start to dissect it.
Let's begin with nonfiction text.
AUTHORS = ARCHITECTS
Just like architects design homes,
authors design text.
Authors choose the structure of each paragraph just like architects choose the structure of each room.
Authors capture people's attention
just like architects capture people's attention with curb appeal.
Author's wrap up their text
just like architects wrap up their projects with everything in place with no loose ends.
So, let's look at the structures authors use to build their paragraphs.
These structures are what you will use when you create content in a paragraph.
Figurative language is HUGE!
Authors use this to either help us understand a concept better or to entertain us by using imagery.
Either way, we treat figurative language like vocabulary.
Sometimes we need to use context clues to help us understand the connection between what was said and what actually happened.
Once we figure out all that stuff,
we can finally analyze the
AUTHOR'S PURPOSE.
Authors write for a reason and we can determine that reason by
WHAT they write and
HOW they write.
